Mahavir Jayanti was celebrated with religious fervor in various parts of the country on Thursday.
In Haryana, at jagadhari a function was organised at Ramlila ground. While addressing the function Yamunanagar Superintendent of Police Mitesh Jain appealed to the people to follow the path shown by Lord Mahavir for welfare of the humanity.A procession was also taken out in Yamunanagar.
In Punjab, jain families at Faridkot celebrated Mahavir Jayanti and performed Puja in the temples. In Chandigarh, the Digambar Jain and Shwetamber Jain temples were decorated with flowers and around 500 Jain families of the city performed Puja there. A procession was taken out in the city to mark the occasion.
The President, Vice President and the Prime Minister have greeted the people on the occasion.
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said the teachings of Lord Mahavir are more relevant in the present-day world.
Addressing a programme organised to mark the Mahavir Jayanti at his residence in New Delhi on Thursday, Dr. Singh said peace of the whole world was disturbed with the countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, South Africa and the nations of WestAsia passing through an era of peacelessness.
He said, the teachings and the principles of Lord Mahavir have a good influence on constitution. Dr. Singh urged the people of all religions to maintain peace and brotherhood among themselves.
