Maharashtra Advocate General Shreehari Aney resigned today amid a row over his remarks about a separate Marathwada state. According to an official from the Governor's office, Aney had visited Raj Bhavan this morning and handed over his resignation to Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao.

The move comes after an event in Jalna district of Marathwada on Sunday, where Aney had stated that Marathwada bore more injustice than Vidarbha and should therefore be independent.

The opposition parties and Shiv Sena staged demonstrations in Vidhanbhavan vicinity even today. The demonstrators flashed boards demanding apology from Aney, and action against him.
Meanwhile, Mr. Aney made it clear that neither Governor nor Chief Minister had asked him to resign. He said that he firmly believes that as an Advocate General, it is his constitutional duty to place the interest of the people above the interest of governmental mechanism.
