In Maharashtra's Sangli, a village has taken steps to eliminate the use of mobile phones and TV sets to undergo a digital detox. Through this unique initiative, the villagers have to shut their mobile phones and TV sets for one and a half hours in the evening and have to engage in reading activities.
''
''AIR correspondent reports that As the clock ticks 7 in the evening in the Mohityanche Vadgaon village in Sangli, a siren is sounded to inform people to put their mobile phones and other electronic devices aside for one and a half hours. In no time, television sets and mobiles are switched off, students reach their homes, grab their books and start their studies. Not only the students, but even housewives and other villagers have been engaging themselves in reading different types of books. It is to be noted that Mohitanyche Vadgaon has been blessed with as many as 15 freedom fighters and the village as a whole played an important role during the freedom struggle. The decision of the Mohitanchye Vadgaon directing its villagers to put their digital devices aside for 90 minutes also comes at a time when the country is celebrating 75 years of India's independence.
''
''Vijay Mohite, Sarpanch of the village says that there are many prime-time serials in Marathi which are largely watched by women folks and other villagers from 7 to 8.30 pm. He said, even if a student wants to focus on his study during this period, his attention is distracted due to the noise of the television. Also, television and mobile phones are becoming hurdles in communication between parents and their wards. In order to see that villagers abide by the diktat, Anganwadi workers, teachers and members of the gram panchayats have been entrusted the responsibility to inspect houses between 7 to 8.30 pm. The initiative undertaken by the village sarpanch has been receiving a positive response from the villagers and it is expected that other villages in the state also follow the suit and implement the digital detox initiative.
