Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has resigned in the back drop of the Adarsh Housing Society scam. The state Governor K Sankaranarayanan has accepted his resignation and asked to him to continue till an alternative arrangement is made.Chavan's resignation comes after the submission of an enquiry report by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister A K Antony to Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Later, in the morning, Sonia Gandhi asked Chavan to step down.According to political analysts, the front runners to replace Chavan are Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Union Science and Technology Minister Prithviraj Chavan. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister A K Antony will be in Mumbai today to attend the Congress Legislature Party meeting as central observers.Ashok Chavan had last week offered to quit following his alleged role in the scam. It was alleged that three of his relatives, including his mother-in-law owned flats in the society which was meant for war widows and veterans.Talking to reporters in Mumbai, Ashok Chavan said his resignation does not prove his guilt in the Adarsh Housing Society scam. He was 100 per cent sure that he would come out clean on the issue. Chavan said, he resigned because of the Congress party's moral stand on such issues.Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry has ordered a CBI probe into the Adarsh Housing Society Scam, involving allotment of flats to three former Service Chiefs and several leaders. Defence sources told our Correspondent that CBI has also been asked to fix responsibility for the lapses. Among other things, the Agency has been asked to look into the circumstances under which No Objection Certificate was issued to the Housing Society though the land was allotted for Army purposes. The CBI has also been asked to find out the extent to which the orders were carried out for the welfare of the Kargil War Widows.Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has also said some action could be to be taken by his department against the Adarsh Housing Society in the next two to three days for alleged violation of environmental norms.
