The Maharashtra Government on Thursday decided to approach the Supreme Court after the Bombay High Court had struck down the 'best of five' system to admissions in Std XI on the ground that it was discriminatory. The decision to move the apex court was taken at a meeting of the state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Chavan in Mumbai. Mr. Chavan said that around 16 lakh SSC had studied as per the best of five system and the court’s ruling will affect them adversely if put into effect. He added that the junior college admissions will remain stayed till July 10.

In the cabinet meeting today, the state government has also issued an order for each school principal to form and head their school transport committee. The government has also increased the grant for the disabled to Rupees 1.5 lakh.

And for quicker redressal of public grievance, the state government has authorised the Municipal commissioner to tackle and initiate any legal proceedings against civil servants working in municipal councils and corporations.
