Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan has accepted Chief Minister Ashok Chavan's resignation, following the Adarsh Housing Society scam. However, Mr Chavan has been asked to continue as the Acting Chief Minister till a decision is taken on the next Chief Minister. Congress president Sonia Gandhi had this morning asked Mr Chavan to submit his resignation to the Governor. The decision to accept the resignation came minutes after an inquiry report was submitted to the Congress President by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister A K Antony.According to political analysts, the front runners to replace Mr Chavan are Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Union Science and Technology Minister Prithviraj Chavan. FinanceMinister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister A K Antony will be in Mumbai today to attend the Congress Legislature Party meeting as central observers.Mr Ashok Chavan had last week offered to quit following his alleged role in the scam. It was stated that three of his relatives, including his mother-in-law owned flats in the society which was meant for war widows and veterans.
