In Maharashtra, ten Municipal Corporations are going to polls tomorrow after the General Elections to the Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis which were held on February 7.They include Nagpur Municipal Corporation along with two more bodies of Amravati and Akola from Vidarbha region.There are 2,604 candidates in the fray for total 304 seats belonging to the three Municipal Corporations, which include 724 candidates vying for 87 seats in Amravati and 598 candidates who are trying their luck for 73 seats in Akola Municipal Corporation.On the basis of the recent census, the elections are being held for 145 seats in Nagpur Municipal Corporation in the form of two-member wards this time.The total number of candidates in fray is 1229 and Mrs. Vishakha Maind of Bharatiya Janata Party has already been elected unopposed, being the only candidate with valid nomination from the seat reserved for Other Backward Class Women category. The total number of electorate is around 19,86,000 which includes over 9,63,000 female voters.In all, 2487 polling centres have been set up for this purpose, out of which 162 centres are sensitive in nature.Around eight and half thousand police personnel have been deployed in order to ensure smooth polling in free and fair manner.The electoral battle would be mainly centered around the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti with the Shiv Sena and Republican Party of India (Athawale Group) opposed by the Congress and Nationalist Congress alliance garnering support from other splinter groups.Apart from this, the third front constituting RPI and the Leftist Parties along with the Bahujan Samaj Party and Bahujan Republican Ekta Manch are also operating separately.The election scenario has also been complicated by the presence of large number of dissidents from various parties, independents and the friendly fights at several places between the allies.As a result, the contests are mostly multi-cornered.The counting of votes of Municipal Corporation elections would be taken up simultaneously along with that of the Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis on February 17.
