Maharashtra Deputy CM orders SIT to probe the murder of journalist Shashikant Warishe

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday ordered a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the murder of journalist Shashikant Warishe in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra earlier this week.<br />'' <br />'' A statement released from Deputy CM's office said the police administration has been directed to set up the SIT headed by a high-ranking official.<br />'' <br />'' The 48-year-old journalist was mowed down by an SUV allegedly driven by land dealer Pandharinath Amberkar on 6th February in Rajapur in Ratnagiri district. He succumbed to his injuries the next day. An article written by Warishe against Amberkar had appeared in a local Marathi newspaper on the morning of the incident. Amberkar, arrested for murder, allegedly used to threaten any person who opposed land acquisition for a proposed refinery in the area.<br />'' <br />'' The case has caused political furore with many politicians demanding a probe.<br />'' <br />''Journalists and other organisations took out silent protest marches in Mumbai on Friday and in Ratnagiri today demanding justice for Warishe's family and ensuring stringent punishment to the prime accused.
