Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan resigns

A day after the NCP pulled out of the Congress-led coalition government in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today tendered his resignation.

Mr. Chavan met Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao and submitted his resignation letter on Friday evening.

The Congress led state government had been reduced to a minority after NCP announced its decision to split from the 15 year old ruling alliance.

Earlier, senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly Eknath Khadse had also met the Governor to seek Chavan’s dismissal and the imposition of the President’s rule.

Since the assembly poll process is on, the Governor can now either tell Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to continue in caretaker capacity or recommend President's Rule.
After 1980, this will only be the second time that Maharashtra will be under President's Rule, if the governor decided to recommend so.
