Maharashtra Chief Minister, Prithviraj Chavan has ordered a probe in the Thane building collapse. He announced in Assembly that two lakh rupees compensation will be given to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the tragedy. He said Additional Chief Secretary rank officer will conduct a thorough probe and the Deputy Municipal Commissioner of Thane area and senior Police Inspector has been suspended in connection with the collapse.
Police has already registered a case against the builders and efforts are on to nab the culprits. The death toll in the building collapse in Shil Phata area of the Thane district has gone upto 45. Some people are still believed to be trapped under the debris. The deceased include construction workers, women and children. While 59 people were injured in the incident, 17 of them have been discharged from hospital after administering medical treatment to them. The seven-storey illegal structure collapsed around 6 p.m. on Thursday.
AIR correspondent reports rescue operation is still on to trace and save the victims of the building collapse. Sensor-fitted equipments are looking for survivors and bodies in the massive debris of bricks, mortar and twisted steel even 25 hours after the newly constructed building collapsed in Shil Phata area of Thane. Cranes are being used to remove the rubble to trace the survivors with the help of life detector sensors.
State-of-the-art equipment fitted with thermal cameras are being inserted into the wreckage to locate the survivors and extricate them with gas cutters. Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan visited the collapse site and the hospitals to inquire about the condition of the injured. He has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of those who died in the incident and Rs 50 thousand to those who were injured.
