Maharashtra: BJP holds 'Chakka Jam' protest to demand OBC reservation in local bodies

<span style="color: #222222;">The Maharashtra Unit of the BJP today held 'Chakka Jam' protests across the state to press for its demand of restoring reservation for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) in local governing bodies.</span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;"> </span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">The party had earlier announced that it would hold agitation at 1,000 locations across the state.</span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;"> </span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">The Supreme Court had recently struck down such reservation after observing that the total number of seats earmarked for various communities, including SC and ST, should not exceed 50 per cent of its total strength.</span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;"> </span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">The BJP has been alleging that Maharashtra lost the case in the apex court due to the State Government not providing empirical data to show the need for such reservations in local bodies.</span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;"> </span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Devendra Fadnavis, who participated in a protest in his home district Nagpur was detained by the police along with several other agitators in order to control the situation.</span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;"> </span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">Agitations were also held in Mumbai and its neighbouring areas.</span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;"> </span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">Leader of Opposition in the Council Pravin Darekar took part in an agitation in Thane.</span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;"> </span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">Reacting over the protests, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said, there were legal hurdles in the implementation of the Maratha quota, quashed by the Supreme Court in May and a legal solution needs to be found.</span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;"> </span><br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">He said, when there is unanimity and agreement over an issue, protest should stop and dialogue should take place.</span>
