Maharashtra Assembly Winter Session begins on stormy note

The Winter Session of the Maharashtra Legislature began in Nagpur today. It started on a stormy note with the Opposition demanding suspension of the Question Hour to take up discussion regarding the damages caused by the Phyan cyclone and non-seasonal rains in various parts of the state. Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Mr. Eknath Khadse argued that about 45 people have lost their lives while many of the fishermen were still missing and the State Government has not provided adequate relief to the affected people. He was joined by his colleagues from the Opposition benches.

Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Chhagan Bhujbal said the Government was fully aware about the enormity of the damages and the topic was already listed for discussion later in the day. Therefore, there was no need for suspension of the Question Hour, he asserted. The Opposition members entered into the well and shouted slogans as the Speaker declined their demand and the proceedings had to be adjourned twice before the things smoothened. Similar scenes were observed in the Upper house and the Council Chairman Mr. Shivajirao Deshmukh also had to adjourn the proceedings for the same purpose.

Meanwhile, the presiding officers of both the houses reserved their ruling on the notices for breach of privilege motion given by the Opposition over the alleged leakage of the Ram Pradhan Committee report which probed the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack last year. There were three such notices in the lower house and two in the upper house.

The one submitted by Mr. Khadse named the Chief Minister, Home Minister, Chief Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary while another by Mr. Desai included Mr. Ram Pradhan also. The presiding officers informed that decision in this regard would be taken after soliciting the responses of the concerned people.
