In Assam, Mahalaya is being observed with religious fervour. People in large numbers gathered on the bank of the Brahmaputra river in Guwahati and other parts to pay homage to their ancestors. Foods and other things are offered to poor on this occasion. Cultural procession and religious meetings are also being organised. A strict vigil is being maintained by security forces.
