Maha: Only 3 pc water left in drought-hit Marathwada dams

The drought situation in Maharashtra's Marathwada region has worsened with only 3 per cent water left in its dams now, officials said today. This is a drastic decline in water storage as at this time last year, the level in Marathwada's dams was much higher at 11 per cent, Aurangabad Divisional Commissioner Umakant Dangat told PTI.

Eight of the region's 11 major dams are at dead storage level, meaning water from these dams cannot flow out but has to be lifted. The Divisional Commissioner said, administration will also use the groundwater stock. With the Met Department's good forecast for the coming Monsoon season, the officer hoped that authorities will be able to carry on till the monsoon arrives.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra's Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan said, Government has already cut water supply to the industries. The collectors have been instructed that the use of water for drinking is the top priority, he said. An Irrigation Department official said, dams across Maharashtra have only 19 per cent water left compared to 32 per cent this time last year.
