Maha CM Fadnavis says competent authority to probe Mahad Bridge collapse; Massive search on; 2 bodies found

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said that a competent authority will inquire into the Mahad Bridge Collapse incident. <br/><br/>The Chief Minister along with PWD Minister Chandrakant Patil, MSRDC Minister Eknath Shinde and Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil conducted an aerial survey of the region. <br/><br/>Speaking to reporters after visiting the tragedy spot, Mr. Fadnavis said that orders have been given to conduct a safety audit of all old bridges in the state. He added that overcast weather conditions and the overflowing Savitri River are hampering search and rescue operations in the region.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, more than 16 hours after the Bridge collapse, rescue teams have been able to find just two bodies. <br/><br/>As per reports, ten vehicles including 2 State Transport buses were plying on the old bridge that collapsed suddenly due to heavy rains and floods. It is suspected that the buses were carrying a total of 17 passengers apart from a driver and conductor in each.<br/><br/>Rescue operations are currently on to find the missing. Two teams of National Disaster Relief Force with 40 jawans are on the job, equipped with 6 boats and divers. <br/><br/>Coast guard helicopter Chetak and a Sea King 42B helicopter has also been pressed into action. Transport authority has started a toll free helpline 1077 for enquiry related to passengers travelling in the ill-fated buses.<br/><br/>The tragedy also echoed in Maharashtra State legislature as well as Parliament. In the state assembly, former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan sought a judicial probe and action against the guilty for allowing the British era bridge to remain open for traffic. <br/><br/>In Parliament, Shiv Sena member Shrirang Barne warned that another bridge in Chiplun may face a similar fate. Informing the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour about the incident, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, four teams of NDRF along with 12 boats have been immediately rushed to the spot. <br/><br/>He said Centre is providing all possible assistance to Maharashtra government in the search operation for missing vehicles and their passengers in Raigadh district .
