Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan today assured the delegation of journalists in Mumbai of speedy action into the killing of senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey. He said, a bill to protect journalists will be tabled in the monsoon session of the state Assembly. Rejecting the demand of media persons for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Chavan said that the state police should be given a chance to solve the murder case. Journalists in the city later staged a sit-in at the Mantralaya premises, protesting the rejection of the demand of a CBI probe into the case. Earlier, over 500 journalists went on a two-km-long march from Press Club to Mantralaya in the afternoon to protest the killing of investigative editor Dey, The protesters also demanded that existing laws be strengthened to make attacks on journalists non-bailable offences. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Crime Branch today released a sketch of a suspect in the murder case. Dey was shot dead by four unidentified assailants riding motorcycles while he was riding his motorcycle near his residence in Powai Saturday afternoon.
