Many commuters in Mumbai and across Maharashtra were inconvenienced as the supporters of Autorickshaw Malak-Chalak Sanghatana Sanyukta Kriti Samiti went on a day's strike today. The union is demanding an additional fare hike despite a 1 rupee hike on minimum fare – from 11 to 12 rupees – permitted by the Regional Transport Authority last week.Mumbai Autorickshawmen’s union MAU went off the roads from midnight while the unions headed by Congress, Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena opposed the strike. The other unions attempted to fill the void by offering services to the commuters in the city, including shared trips to clear the morning peak hour rush.Meanwhile, the state government has said that disciplinary action will be taken against the auto rickshaw drivers who refuse to ply their vehicles today.
