Magniicent Mary bags Bronze for India

At the London Olympics today, India's MC Mary Kom had to settle for a Bronze medal in the women's Flyweight (51 kg.) category boxing event. Mary Kom's dreams of clinching a bigger medal were dashed when Great Britain's Nicola Adams outclassed the Indian pugilist in the semifinals with a 11-6 verdict.

A five-time world champion, Mary Kom had won several medals in the 46 and 48-kg categories but never in the 51-kg division. She was forced to shift to this category and gain weight two years ago after the world body AIBA decided to allow women's boxing in only three weight catgories — the lowest one being 51 kg.

However, a bronze is certainly a great effort from 'Magniicent Mary, whose name would be etched in the history of Indian sports as far as women's boxing is concerned.

With the bronze, India's medal tally increased to a total of four, which include One Silver and 3 Bronze.

Later tonight, boxer Laishram Devendro Singh is slated to face Paddy Barnes of Ireland in the quarter-finals of the 49-kg category.
