The Madras High Court has issued notice to the Centre and the State Governments on a petition seeking to set up a system along theTamilnadu Coast to protect the lives of Indian fishermen straying intothe Srilankan waters. The public interest litigation came up for hearing yesterday. The petitioner has said that the fishermen were afraid to go near the India-Srilanka International Maritime Boundary line and claimed that they have been deprived of their fundamental right to a livelihood. Pointing out that it was very difficult for them to identify the boundary line, he said that it was the main reason for all the problems. Suggesting that the solution would be to provide a chain of Automatic Identification System stations along the Tamilnadu Coast, he said that the process would also not be very expensive. The public interest litigation came up for hearing before the bench of Justices S.Rajeswaran and KBK Vasuki. The Assistant Solicitor General of India J.Ravindran took notice on behalf of the Union Government.The matter was posted on June 13 for further hearing.The petitioner has claimed that more than 400 Indian fishermen have lost their lives for straying into the Srilankan waters unknowingly.
