<span style="color: #222222;">The Madras Engineers Group and Centre in Bengaluru celebrated its formation day today. It came into existence on September 30, 1780 under the British Indian army. Originally known as the Madras Sappers, they were part of the Madras Presidency Army of the British Raj. They hold the distinction of being the oldest Corps of Engineers. The Madras Sappers are fondly addressed as Thambis. <br />''<br />''They have drawn the attention during the annual Republic Day parade. They were adjudged the best marching contingent for nine times till date. They have five Dronacharya awardees, ten Arjuna Awardees, fourteen Olympians and a Padma Shri awardee. A museum in the Madras Sappers and Centre in Bengaluru next to Ulsoor lake illustrates the history, bravery and valor of the sappers. The museum also has on display the armory, attire and medals won by their regiment. </span><br />
