M.S. Swaminathan observes certain linkage between food & drugs in treating diseases

Prof. M.S. Swaminathan, Emeritus Convenor and Chief Mentor of MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai, observed that there is certain linkage between food and drugs in treating diseases. Focusing on food for all he pointed that rising sea levels, climate change are future challenges for green revolution. During the session on Food and Nutrition Security at the ongoing 104th Indian Science Congress in Tirupati today, Mr. Swaminathan said the changes in precipitation levels and temperatures are playing a pivotal role in agriculture. <br/><br/>On malnutrition, he called on to get prepared for the zero hunger challenge. Emphasising that India needs to become hunger free, he cautioned about genetic erosion which could lead to health security. He said the slogan of conserver, cultivator and breeder must be taken up to face future challenges. <br/><br/>Crediting former Prime Minister Nehru's vision in setting up agricultural universities and research institutes to face the food challenges of the country, Mr. Swaminathan underlined the importance of nutrition literacy among the public especially in rural India. He said the new genetic combinations with geo methods will solve the problems related to nutrition, adding that novel genetic combinations could address the problem. He emphasized on having botanical, genetic and nutrition gardens in every village to educate the masses. He gave a call to the young generation to come forward for taking up research in agriculture.
