Lukewarm response of day-long strike in Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu, the day-long strike called by various trade unions against price rise, violation of labour laws and disinvestment of PSUs evoked lukewarm response. As the State Government had warned of stern action against those persons disturbing law and order, normalcy prevailed throughout the State. Shops and business establishments continued to function, buses and auto rickshaws are also plying on the road like any other day. However, flight services on the Chennai-Kolkata route were affected as six flights were cancelled in the morning due to the strike in the left ruled state. In Chennai, more than 3000 workers were arrested while they attempted rail and road roko this morning, CITU sources said. In the cotton city Tiruppur, it is reported that approximately 3 lakh workers employed in the banian and hosiery manufacturing units stayed away as the business establishments remained closed. However there was no disruption to normal life.
