Luka shatters 15-year-old women's 800 metres national record

Rising Indian middle distance runner Tintu Luka has shattered the 15-year-old women's 800 metres national record. She set the record last night at the Poljud Stadium in Split, Croatia, while participating in the VTB Bank Continental Cup. Luka clocked 1 minute, 59.17 seconds to finish a creditable fifth in the race. The 21-year-old, was representing Asia Pacific in the top-flight IAAF competition which was earlier known as the World Cup of athletics. Luka's time bettered the earlier national mark of 1 minute, 59.85 seconds which was in the name of Shiny Wilson since 1995, one of the oldest records in Indian athletics. Only eight athletes took part in the race in Croatia — season's top two each from four continental groupings — Asia Pacific, Americas, Africa and Europe. Luka, a protege of legendary athlete P T Usha, was the leading athlete in Asia this season. Former world champion and Beijing Olympics silver medallist Janeth Jepkosgei Busienei of Kenya, representing Africa, won the race in 1 minute 57.88 seconds. The second place went to 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games silver medallist Kenia Sinclair of Jamaica(representing Americas) was second. Luka was richer by USD 5,000 U.S. Dollars besides earning five points for her Asia Pacific team. This was Luka's first sub-two-minute performance in her career.
