In Sri Lanka, a former army chief and currently minister has accused his successor of committing war crimes during the LTTE war and said he was ready to testify against the ex-military commander. Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, who was army chief during victory against LTTE in 2009, said that he had several complaints against General Jagath Jayasuriya related to crimes against suspects in his custody at that time. <br/><br/>Mr. Fonseka told reporters in Colombo today that as he started an investigation, the then rulers removed him as army commander. Sarath Fonseka was removed and imprisoned as he became an opposition candidate against then President Mahinda Rajapakse during 2010 elections. General Jayasurya was promoted to army chief barely three months after the war ended. <br/><br/>A human rights group this week filed two cases against him in Colombia and Brazil, who until recently was Sri Lanka's ambassador in several South American countries. The group alleged that Jayasuriya oversaw torture camps and was responsible for hundreds of disappearances and extra judicial killings in the final stages of the conflict when he was army commander in the north.
