LS urges Govt. to give fair deal to Urdu language

In the Lok Sabha today, members cutting across party lines made a strong plea for promoting Urdu language. The demand was raised by SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav for a fair deal to Urdu language, especially for its media during zero hour. This led to an impromptu discussion in the House in which Union Ministers Mamata Banerjee, Farooq Abdullah and Ghulam Nabi Azad too participated. Speaker Mrs.Meira Kumar asked the government to heed to the overwhelming sentiments of the members on the pitiable condition of the Urdu language and its media. Responding to the discussion, Leader of the house and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee informed that the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had already instructed Information and Broadcasting Ministry to ensure that Urdu media get due share of government-funded advertisements through DAVP. Noting that the entire House was united and expressed solidarity on this issue, Mr.Mukherjee said, government will take all steps to strength it.
