The Lok Sabha today took up the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill-2012 for consideration and passing. The Bill seeks to extend the tenure of the Board of Governors of the Medical Council of India (MCI) by one more year beyond the 14th of May this year. Earlier, the tenure of the Board was two years.
Participating in the debate on the bill seeking the extension of MCI's term, most of the members demanded that the MCI should be made an elected body at the earliest. The opposition members were of the view that MCI election should be held within six month. The discussion remained inconclusive.
