LS takes up discussion on FDI in multi-brand retail this afternoon

The Lok Sabha will take up a discussion on FDI in multi-brand retail today under Rule 184 which entails voting. Both Congress and BJP have issued whips to their MPs to be present in the House and vote according to the instructions of their Party. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj is likely to initiate the debate on the issue on the BJP's behalf. Left Parties, AIADMK, Trinamool Congress, Biju Janata Dal, Assam Gana Parishad and some other parties are also against the government's decision to allow FDI in multi-brand retail. Samajwadi Party is yet to clear its stand on the issue. BSP Chief Mayawati yesterday indicated that she will support the Government in Parliament on the issue saying the Centre has not thrust the policy on the States. Ms. Mayawati said, her aim to keep the communal forces at bay will also determine her party's stand in Parliament.
Expressing confidence that the motion against FDI will be defeated in Parliament, the government today hoped that parties will see through the politics of BJP and vote accordingly.Talking to reporters outside parliament,Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath urged all parties not to subscribe to the politics of BJP.

Mr. Kamal Nath was replying to a question on support by SP and BSP on FDI. His remarks came ahead of Lok Sabha taking up a motion against FDI in multi-brand retail under a rule which entails voting.
BJP today said it is against rushing through FDI-related FEMA notification in Parliament along with the main debate on the issue.The FEMA rules ae key for operalitionalising the policy decision to open FDI in multi-brand retail.BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters after a Parliamentary Party meeting this morning that as far as regulation notification under Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) is concerned in terms of Sec 48 of FEMA,that notification has to placed on the floor of the House for 30 days to enable the members to see it, consider, think and
submit modifications and disapproval amendments.He said,it cannot be rushed through alongwith the main debate on the FDI issue.
Prasad said,a whip has been issued to all party MPs of both Houses. The party has finetuned its strategy as far as opposition to the FDI is concerned. The debate in Lok Sabha will be started by Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj and senior leader Murli Manohar Joshi will intervene tommorrow.
Prasad said in Rajya Sabha, the debate will be initiated by Leader of the Opposition Arun jaitley and senior leader M Venkaiah Naidu will also intervene in the debate.
