LS speaker holds discussion with leaders on taking impeachment motion against Sen

The Lok Sabha Speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar is holding discussions with the leaders of the political parties on taking up the impeachment motion against Justice Soumitra Sen as government hints that it may not be taken up as the Culcutta High Court Judge has already resigned.

According to Lok Sabha schedule, the impeachment motion is listed in the business for the day. The Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar told reporters outside Parliament before the House began today that there is no All Party Meeting on the issue.

Meanwhile, top government sources told AIR that the impeachment motion may not be taken up as the Judge has already resigned. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mr. V. Narayansamy said that there is no point in taking up the impeachment motion when the Judge has resigned.

The discussion among the political parties and Speaker follow the acceptance of resignation by Justice Sen from the post by the President Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil. The impeachment motion has already been adopted by the Rajya Sabha with the two thirds of majority. The proceedings of the impeachment motion were set in process when over 50 Rajya Sabha MPs. moved such a motion.

The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Mohd. Hamid Ansari had set up a special committee constituted to look into the allegations levellled against Justice Sen. The Committee found that the charges of financial irregularities against him to be correct.

Justice Sen has been charged with misappropriation of funds as a receiver when he was a lawyer in the 80's in the Culcutta High Court besides misrepresentation of facts.
