LS Speaker calls for strengthening parliamentary institutions

The Speaker Ms Miera Kumar today called for stregthening the Parliamentry institutions to effectively take on the challanges facing the polities and societies across the globe. Addressing the concluding session of the 20th conference of the Speakers and the Presiding officers of the common wealth in New Delhi today, Ms Miera Kumar asserted that the presiding officers of the legislatures have to take a lead in this direction. <br/><br/>She said that the sucess of the common wealth will go a long way in the global community's efforts in stregthening democracy. Later talking to news men she said that a proposal was mooted to create a mechanism for the implementation of the recommendations of the conference and it is expected to be in operation by next year. <br/><br/>Ms Kumar said that the role of Speaker as a mediator and administrational Parliament was focus of discussions in the conference. She said there was a consensus that all modern gadgets should be provided to Parliaments for their effective and transparent functioning but the use of mobile and other electronic devices should not be allowed in the House as it amounts to disrespect to the debate going on. <br/><br/>Ms Meira Kumar said that the Speakers shared their experiences of running the Question-hour smoothly and the conduct of question-hour by the New Zealand Parliament was liked. AIR Correspndent reports that the 61 Speakers and Presiding Officers of Legislatures from the Commonwealth including those of the Assemblies from India participated in the deliberations.
