LS passes Jharkhand Panchayati Raj amendment bill

The Lok Sabha today passed the Jharkhand Panchayati Raj amendment bill to pave the way for holding panchayat elections in the state, now under Central Rule. The amendment is necessary to incorporate the provision for 50 per cent reservation of seats and offices of chairpersons for women. The Panchayat elections in the state could not be held in 2005 because of various reasons including legal wrangles. Replying to a brief debate, the Panchayati Raj Minister, Dr C P Joshi, assured the house that elections to Panchayati Raj institutions in the state will be held as soon as possible. He said the Centre is in touch with the State Governor for working out modalities for elections.
