LS passes Code of Criminal Procedure Amendment Bill 2010

Lok Sabha today passed the Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill 2010. The bill aims to make it compulsory for the Police to record the reasons for making an arrest as well as for not making an arrest in respect of a cognizable offence for which the maximum punishment is up to seven years. Replying to the debate, the Home Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram shared the members' views on certain arbitrary powers of the police force and said things are being reviewed in the right earnest. He said that Centre has repeatedly urged the States to adopt the Model Police Act which includes various facets of policing like policing in metropolis, investigation, police accountability and also grievances of police personnel. The Home Minister said that he has also taken up the matter with the Law Ministry for a comprehensive legislation and Law Minister has assured to take the Law Commission into confidence for the same.Earlier, participating in the debate, members cutting across the party lines said that people were gradually losing faith in the functioning style of the Police.
