LS passes bill to include more communities in SC list

The Lok Sabha today passed the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Orders (Amendment) Bill, 2014. The Bill seeks to amend the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950 and the Constitution (Sikkim) Scheduled Castes Order, 1978. It includes certain communities in the list of Scheduled Castes in Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Tripura.

The Bill also removes a community from the list of Scheduled Castes in Sikkim. The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha during the last session. During the discussion, Mulayam Singh Yadav of Samajwadi party demanded inclusion of 17 castes from Uttar Pradesh in the list.

Replying to a discussion on the bill, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot said that the Uttar Pradesh government did not responded to the queries of registrar general and schedule cast commission. He said the state government has withdrawn its recommendation in this regard.
