LS passes Bill to entrust affairs of the MCI to Board of Governors

The Lok Sabha today passed a Bill to entrust the affairs of the Medical Council of India to a Board of Governors till the Council is reconstituted. The Bill was passed through voice vote in the midst of din by the Opposition members.According to the provisions of the Bill the Indian Medical Council will be superceded and a Board of Governors will be appointed to oversee its function for one year or till the reconstitution of the Council, whichever is earlier.The Board of Governors will exercise the powers and discharge the functions of the Medical Council to bring in transparency and accountability in the functioning. The Central government will issue policy directives to the Board of Governors or the Council. The Bill seeks to replace the ordinance in this regard which was promulgated on the 15th of May this year.The move was initiated in the backdrop of a number of irregularities and cases of corruption involving the Medical Council of India on granting recognition and accreditation of Medical colleges.
