LS passes Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation (Amendment) Bill

The Lok Sabha today passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation
(Amendment) Bill, 2014 amidst a din with members from the TRS, BJD, Congress and MIM opposing it.

Members belonging to the TRS trooped into the well of the house, opposing the bill.

BJD members also strongly protested the amendment bill. The bill, replacing the ordinance, was moved by Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

It seeks the merger of 236 revenue villages of Khammam district in Telangana with Andhra Pradesh to facilitate the Polavaram multi-purpose irrigation project.

A Statutory Resolution disapproving the Amendment Bill, moved by Vindo Kumar of the TRS, the Trinamool Congress and the BJD was negated by a voice vote.
Earlier, Mr Kumar opposed the clubbing of the Amendment Bill and the Statutory Resolution for discussion. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has ruled it out saying it was the practice in the House to save time.

Opposing the bill, Saugata Roy of the Trinamool Congress and G. Sukhender Reddy of the Congress described the bill as anti-tribal and anti-constitution.

Bhartruhari Mehtab of the BJD demanded a meeting of Chief Ministers of four states-Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh to take their views on the issue.

He accused the Centre of increasing the height of the Polavaram project without taking the consent of affected areas in Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Later, the House was adjourned till 2 PM amidst noisy scenes.
