LS holds discussion on Bill to remove anomalies in HC judges' pensionary benefits

The Lok Sabha today took up the High Court and the Supreme Court Judges (Salaries and Conditions of Service) Amendment Bill,2015 for discussion. The bill aims at removing anomalies in pensionary benefits of high court judges elevated from the bar. <br/><br/>It also seeks to simplify some of the provisions relating to determination of leave allowances of judges of High Courts and the Apex court.During the discussion, members cutting across the party lines pitched for judicial accountability. <br/><br/>Initiating the debate, S P Muddahanumegowda of Congress urged the government to bring a judicial accountability bill. He said the people have every right to see that judges are accountable to them as parliamentarians are always asked to be accountable to the people. Kalyan Banerjee of TMC criticized the collegium system for appointment of Judges saying that the system has failed. <br/><br/>He also called for a national debate on the apex court's decision striking down the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC). Satyapal Singh of BJP also spoke on similar lines and demanded judicial accountability. The discussion on the bill remained inconclusive.
