The Lok Sabha took up a debate on problems of procuring food grains and their storage in the country today. Initiating the discussion, Mr. Sharad Yadav of JD (U) said farmers are facing problems in Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and several other regions due to massive production of food grains this year as there are no adequate storage facilities. He said that the government has estimated an additional surplus of 20 million ton of food grains but it could be much more than that.
Citing problem of shortage of gunny bags and some other issues, Mr. Yadav said that different ministries have to work together to solve the problem. He said that the government needs to take a clear decision in this regard. The debate could not conclude today.
