Lok Sabha is continuing discussion on FDI in retail on the second day today. While the opposition has stuck to its demand to withdraw the 51 percent FDI in retail, government charged BJP with politicising the issue and urged the Members of Parliament to vote in support of FDI retail. Initiating the debate CPIM leader Vasudev Acharaya maintained that the decision is against the interests of small traders and farming community. Participating in the debate, JDU Chief, Sharad Yadav said the decision will harm the interests of farmers and people working in retail sector.
Voting on the issue will take place this evening. Speaking outside Parliament, Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Kamal Nath alleged that the issue is being unnecessarily politicised as the decision to implement it rests with the state governments.
Replying to the Opposition's charges Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Praful Patel cautioned against creating unnecessary panic on FDI in retail. He said the farmers and youth of the country are better equipped than ever to face challenges. He said a judicious decision should be taken on the matter after analysing the pros and cons of the issue. Mr. Patel said FDI in retail, contrary to the hype created, will assist in creating better infrastructure and providing jobs.
