The Lok Sabha has adopted a motion calling upon the government to take further effective action to contain the inflationary pressures on the economy and its adverse impact on the common man. The motion was read out by the Speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar who took the sense of the house immediately after the reply by the Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee and response by the Leader of the Opposition, Mrs Sushma Swaraj. Earlier, in his more than hour-long reply to the debate, Mr. Mukherjee said that the government is sensitive to the price rise issue but said that it is the collective responsibility of the political leadership both at the centre and the states to ensure that the impact of the rising prices is minimised specially for the vulnerable sections of society. Mr Mukherjee said unless coordinated efforts are made in this regard, it will be difficult to achieve this objective. Outlining various measures undertaken by the government to address the issue, the Finance Minister said that these will help in reducing the pressure of inflation in the long run. He, at the same time, said that there will be inflationary pressures as economy grows. Responding to the reply, the Leader of the Opposition, Mrs. Swaraj said the finance minister has not come out with any specific measure to provide relief to the Aam Admi saying that the government is not only insensitive but is also in the state of confusion. She said the gap between the rich and the poor is continuously increasing. Mrs Swaraj said the government should at least roll back the recent hike in the in petroleum products. She also suggested that the Centre could also follow the model once Punjab had adopted of giving wheat and rice advances to the employees which could address the problem of storage of foodgrains. AIR Correspondent says that the resolution was taken up after an understanding was reached between the opposition and the government over the deadlock over the type of discussion on the price rise issue. The opposition has dropped its demand for insisting on voting on the matter.
