The first day on the Budget Session of the Lok Sabha today got off to a stormy note, as the House witnessed two adjournments on the issue of price rise and rail fare hike.
As soon as the House reassembled at noon after the first adjournment, Congress member Captain Amrinder Singh and party leader in the House Mallikarjun Kharge moved adjournment motion for a discussion on this issue. TMC members also demanded discussion on the same issue.
Intervening in the matter, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said that the government is ready for discussion any time and there is no question of shying away.
Later, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan in her ruling said that she will not allow discussion on this issue under adjournment motion.
However, members did not pay heed to the Speaker’s ruling and they continued to press for their demand. Amidst the din, the Speaker had to adjourn the House till 2 P.M.
The Rajya Sabha Congress, BSP and Trinamool Congress and AIADMK came down heavily on the government for failure in controlling price rise.
Raising the issue, leader of the Opposition in the House, Ghulam Nabi Azad said that immediately coming to power the BJP has hiked the railway fare and the price of some essential commodities. He urged the government to roll back the price hike.
Echoing the same tune, Bahujan Samajwadi Party leader Mayawati asked the government to evolve a strategy to contain the sky rocketing prices of essential commodities. Samajwadi Party member Ramgopal Yadav described the
government as a representative of business class and asked it to take pro-people approach. Also Sharad Yadav of JDU participated in the discussion which is continuing.
When the House met for the day the Opposition members demanded discussion on price rise and inflation adjourning the question hour. Chairman Mohd. Hamid Ansari agreed to the demand.
