The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day today after witnessing two adjournments in the pre-lunch session.
When the House met at 12.30 p.m. there was no let up in the uproar on the issue of Sri Lankan Tamils and Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma's remarks against Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav.
Presiding Officer Francisco Sardinha did his best to restore order in the House but to no avail. Amidst the pandemonium, he adjourned the House for the day.
Throughout its brief sitting, the House remained in turmoil over both the issues.
Earlier, amidst the uproar, Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj said, the remarks of Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma against Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav are highly unbecoming. She asked the government to clarify its stand on the issue. Mrs. Swaraj said, Mr. Yadav is a senior member of the House and leader of a Party which supports the government from outside.
She asked why Mr. Beni Prasad Verma has not yet been dropped from the Cabinet for his behaviour which she termed as condemnable. She said, no one has the right to level vile allegations against any member of the House.
She said, by publicly humiliating a senior member of the House like Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mr. Verma has committed a breach of privilege.
Because of the repeated adjournments, the House could not conduct its listed business today.
The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned till 2 pm on different issues. The DMK and AIADMK members again trooped into the well of the House over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.
Samajwadi Party members also marched into the well, demanding the sacking of Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma who was present in the House. Amidst the din, ministers laid on the table papers related to their respective ministries.
As the uproar continued, presiding officer Ms. Renuka Chowdhury adjourned the House. Earlier, the House was adjourned till Noon over the same issues.
The House, meanwhile, witnessed some anxious moments as DMK member Mrs. Vasanthi Stanley who was protesting in the well, collapsed, as the House was adjourned for the second time.
Marshals rushed wheelchair and stretcher but Ms. Stanley regained consciousness and rested on the bench. She was later rushed to hospital.
