Lower house of Afghanistan parliament rejects annual budget

Afghanistan’s lower house of Parliament has rejected the annual budget, setting off further confrontation with the Afghan government led by President Hamid Karzai.

A total of 115 MPs out of 122 present, voted against the budget proposal saying there was discrimination in allocation of development spending for some provinces.

House Chairman asked the finance ministry to resend its plan after suitable amendments. A finance ministry official expressed surprise at the rejection saying the MPs demands could have been conveyed through a letter.

The lower house of Parliament has earlier rejected majority of cabinet members proposed by Mr. Karzai and a revised electoral law last week.

Meanwhile, five suicide bombers were arrested today in capital city of Kabul. Interior Ministry said in a statement that the militants were equipped with explosives and suicide vests. It said two suicide vests and a container packed with explosives were recovered from their vehicle.

The militants have recently intensified their commando-style attacks, which involve several suicide bombers attacking government and soft targets simultaneously.
