The Lok Sabha adopted a resolution urging the government to take further effective action to contain the impact of inflation on the common man. The resolution was read out by the Speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar who took the sense of the house after the marathon debate on the issue. Earlier, over hour-long reply to the debate, Mr. Mukherjee rejected the opposition charge that the government is insensitive to the plight of the common man and outlines number of steps taken by the government in this regard. He said that it is collective responsibility of the political leadership both at the centre and the states to ensure that the impact of the rising prices is minimised specially for the vulnerable sections of society. Mr Mukherjee said unless coordinated efforts are made in this regard, it will be difficult to achieve this objective. On the steps taken by the government, the Finance Minister said that these will help in reducing the pressure of inflation in the long run. He, at the same time, said that there will be inflationary pressures, as the economy grows economy grows. The Finance Minister used the opportunity to make a strong plea to the entire spectrum of political parties for support to the government's proposed move for implementing Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Direct Tax Code as part of the major tax reforms. Responding to the reply, the Leader of the Opposition, Mrs. Sushma Swaraj said the finance minister has not come out with any specific measure to provide relief to the Aam Admi alleging that the government is not only insensitive but is also in a state of confusion. Mrs Swaraj said the government should at least roll back the recent hike in the in petroleum products. She also suggested that the Centre could also follow the model once Punjab had adopted of giving wheat and rice advances to the employees which could address the problem of storage of food grains. AIR correspondent said that the issue of price rise was discussed in the form of the motion after the opposition dropped its demand for voting on the discussion as part of the compromise to end the week-long deadlock on the issue.
