Look out notice seeking detention of Mallya last year issued by mistake, clarifies CBI

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has clarified the look out notice seeking detention of liquor baron Vijay Mallya last year was issued by mistake. It said the order was erroneously issued by a lower level officer in the agency. The CBI said it could not legally detain Mallya as there was no non-bailable warrant against him.

The statement came after Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad raised the issue in the House today. He questioned why did the CBI cancelled its lookout notice against the industrialist. He said the CBI had issued the notice in October 2015 and the order was modified in November to merely inform it in case Mr. Mallya leaves the country.
