In the Rowing, Swaran Singh came in fourth in his heats in single sculls while in women's weightlifting, Soniya Chanu ended up seventh in the 48 kg division. India also made a shaky start to their shooting campaign with Vijay Kumar failing to qualify for the final of the men's 10 metre Air Pistol event at the Royal Artillery Barracks.American Ryan Lochte won the 400 metres medley gold beating his compatriot and Olympic superstar Michael Phelps. The flop denied Phelps in his first bid to become the first male swimmer to win the same event at three successive Olympics. In Cycling, Alexander Vinokourov of Kazakhstan took a surprise gold medal in the men's road race. Favorite Mark Cavendish dropped out of contention. Overall, China lead the medal standings with four gold and two bronze medals. Italy were second with two gold, two silver and one bronze. United States are third with one gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
