The Lok Sabha has passed the Rail Budget for the year 2014-15 by voice vote rejecting all amendments on Tuesday.
Responding to the 3 day-long discussion in the house, Railways Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said development, expansion and modernization of Railways are the priorities of the government and there should not be any politics.
Refuting opposition allegations about discrimination among states in allocating funds, he said Rs. 3,280 crore have been allocated to projects in West Bengal.
He reiterated the government’s commitment for completing all ongoing projects and implementing the decisions announced in the interim budget.
He said funds to a tune of over Rs. five lakh crore are required for completing the ongoing projects.
Referring to demands for new trains and new lines by members, he said revenue mobilization is the main challenge before the government.
Mr. Gowda announced survey for Khalilabad, Shravasti, Bahraich and Balrampur rail section and upgrade Gomti Nagar station in Lucknow to international standards.
The Minister also announced setting up of a joint study group to resolve land acquisition issues for railway projects in Kerala.
He informed the house that a committee has been formed to look into the rail connectivity issues of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
He assured members from Odisha to consider introduction of new Rajdhani Express.
Railway Minister assured the house that the common man will not be burdened due to high speed and bullet train projects as the funds will be mobilized through Foreign Direct Investment and Public Private Partnership.
However, he clarified that the FDIs will not be allowed in core areas.
Justifying the decision for hike in rail fare Mr Gowda said that it was need of the hour.
