Lok Sabha passed the 'Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill, 2014' by voice vote. The bill intends to regularise e-rickshaws and aims to provide driving licences for battery-operated vehicles to ply in the national capital and other places of the country.
Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in the house said that the bill has been brought for the welfare and livelihood of the poor who became jobless after the Delhi High Court banned the plying of e-rickshaws on safety concerns. He said, all safety measures including standardisation of designing of the e-rickshaws have already been addressed in the bill. He also mentioned that a loan at a rate of 4 per cent interest will be given to the driver for purchasing the e-rickshaw so that he or she can become the owner.
