The Lok Sabha has passed the Punjab Municipal Corporation Law (Extension to Chandigarh) Amendment Bill, 2017 by voice vote. <br/><br/>It will empower the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh to levy taxes on entertainments and amusements in light of implementation of GST. The legislation transfers the powers to levy entertainment tax and duty from the Central government to the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh. <br/><br/>The bill will replace the ordinance promulgated last month in this regard. Under the 1994 Act, the central government had the power to levy such Tax and duty for Chandigarh.<br/><br/>Replying to a debate on the bill, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, municipal corporations must be financially self-sufficient to create world class facilities. <br/><br/>He said, the Centre has only given its power to Chandigarh Municipal Corporation for collection of entertainment tax. Mr Jaitley also assured the House that the GST Council may review the tax slabs and taxes on goods to make it reasonable if required in future.
