The Lok Sabha was adjourned ten minutes before the lunch following uproar over the non-lifting of 40 lakh tonnes of rice from Punjab by Food Corporation of India (FCI). Raising the matter, Mrs Harsimrat Kaur Badal of the Shiromani Akali Dal said that the rice is of good quality and alleged that the centre was doing injustice to Punjab by not lifting it for more than year. Responding to the Calling Attention on the issue, the Health and Family Welfare Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad said the PAU-201 variety of paddy rice in Punjab is showing higher incidence of damaged grains in rice. He said the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) was of the view that the damage was due to excessive iron content. He said that the analysis report showed that only nine out of 75 samples of rice collected from various places in Punjab, did not conform to the standards of rice as prescribed under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act Rules. He said that the results of analysis have been conveyed to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) as well as the Department of Food and Public Distribution. However, the agitated members of BJP and Akali Dal were not happy with the government reply and some of them trooped into the well of the house forcing its adjournment till 2 PM.
