Lohri being celebrated with fervour in India's northern region

Lohri is being celebrated with great fervour in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and other parts of the northern region. There are also reports of celebrating Lohri of the girl child from various places in Punjab and Haryana. <br/><br/>At Karnal in Haryana, social organisation Sarbat Da Bhala in coordination with Health Department and Bal Kalyan Parishad organised Lohri Beti programme which was attended by the Inspector General of Police Suman Manjri from Madhuban Police Academy.<br/><br/>On this occasion social organization announced to bear all the expenses, occurring on higher education of meritorious girls. Akashvani Kendra Chandigarh also celebrated Lohri today and lit the fire of Lohri in the campus of station.<br/><br/>In Himachal Pradesh also the Lohri festival is being celebrated today with full enthusiasm and fervour. People had started burning the fire outside their homes. Although the traditional songs like Sunder Mundriye-ho, of Lohri has somewhere lost its importance in the changed time. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports, the first festival of New Year, Lohri is being celebrated in different ways in the state today. The people especially in the rural areas gathered at a common place where they burnt the fire and worshipped it. <br/><br/>In Lahaul-Spiti district the doors of religious places have been closed and would be opened on Baisakhi festival. Similarly, in Chamba a torch light march would organised late in the night. People are trying to keep their different traditions alive by taking part in Lohri festival.
