The Rajya Sabha has resumed its normal business today ending the four-day long impasse over objectionable remarks of Minister Niranjan Jyoti. The House resumed the Question Hour after acknowledging the statement which was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week on the issue. Chairman Mohammad Hamid Ansari made an announcement to this effect when the house reassembled this afternoon following three adjournments. He said, the House acknowledges the Prime Minister’s statement appealing members and ministers to maintain civility in public domain and uphold constitutional values.
Earlier, the House was adjourned till noon with the entire opposition insisting on moving a resolution with respect to the derogatory remarks made by Ms. Jyoti. Deputy Chairman P J Kurien allowed deputy Leader of Congress, Anand Sharma to raise the issue on the condition that the Zero Hour will be taken up soon after it. However, Mr Sharma tried to move a two line resolution over the issue which was objected to by the treasury benches. The resolution sought disapproval of any statement made by any Member of Parliament and any member of the Council of Ministers that is inflammatory, derogatory and violates the Constitution and the law of the land. Stating that prior permission is required for moving any resolution, the Deputy Chairman disallowed the proposal. The opposition members remained unrelenting over their demand and trooped into the well of the house seeking voting over their proposed resolution. Amidst noisy scenes, the House witnessed three adjournments.
